Fame’s team has grown from 8 to 36 in the past twelve months, fully remote… Here’s 5 things I've learnt about #management: 1️⃣ The Peter Principle Most people are promoted to a level of incompetence. E.g. an insanely good writer may be promoted to manage a team of writers, because they are good at writing, not management. This can leave a large skill gap in any business with more than 10 employees: management. 2️⃣ A manager’s output Their own output + output of their team = total output Therefore good managers leverage their output by influencing the performance of their managees. 3️⃣ 6 types of managerial activities: 👉 Information gathering - crucial for making effective decisions 👉 Information conveying - crucial for developing managees 👉 Monitoring - don’t abdicate 👉 Decision-making - use where necessary 👉 Nudging - great for developing managees 👉 Meddling - only use if absolutely necessary 4️⃣ Meetings get a bad rep I used to think meetings were a waste of time. Now I understand they are a great medium to execute the managerial activities listed above ☝️ 5️⃣ Understanding Task Relevant Maturity (TRM) Management approach should be customer based on how good the managee is at the role or as Andy Groove likes to call it: Task Relevant Maturity 👉 Low - Structured, task-orientated 👉 Medium - Individual-orientated, two-way communication, support 👉 High - Minimal involvement, clear objectives, monitoring Comment “manager” below if you would like access to internal training on these management principles… you can share it with your managers 👇 🤓
Manager p.s. for meetings I'd recommend making it mandatory to have agendas at all of them - this helps streamline and keep everyone on track
Who in the business takes overall responsibility for leadership, management and accountability- is that you Tom Hunt?
Manager ✌
Totally agree with this! I’ve seen point 1️⃣ happen over and over again. The truth is managing people demands a completely different skillset than being a senior specialist at something. Definitely not talked about enough!
Manager
This is so interesting, Tom. It does not only apply to business but also to other activities. I recognise myself in point 1 - I am a very good folk dancer and a few times I was given the task to teach, manage, and show a lot of moves to several beginners. I nearly went into cardiac arrest for they not understanding everything straight away lol I'm good at dancing, but not teaching.
Count me in Tom Hunt
Manager. This is very useful Tom. It's natural to want to develop your existing staff into managers, but perhaps too easy to do so prematurely in their development. Is the solution to hire externally? Or to invest more in them?
